Bibliographic Information: Meyer, S. (2007). New Moon. New York, N.Y.: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. ISBN: 0316007730
Plot Summary: New Moon is the second novel of the Twilight Saga Series. Edward Cullen and his family are throwing a party for Bella's eighteenth birthday. Bella accidentally gets a paper cut on her finger while unwrapping a gift. Jasper, Edward's adopted brother, attempts to kill Bella because of her blood's scent. Edward and the Cullens move away to protect Bella, and Edward breaks off their relationship. Bella is devastated. She becomes very depressed and heartbroken because she loves Edward so much.
Bella finds that when she partakes in dangerous behaviors, such as riding a motorcycle too fast, she is able to "hear" Edward. After awhile Bella becomes closer to her friend, Jacob Black, and Jacob becomes taken with Bella. Bella learns that Jacob and other tribe members are werewolves. Two vampires, Laurent and Victoria, are after Bella, and Jacob and his pack of werewolves protect Bella. In the end of this novel Edward believes that Bella has killed herself so he goes to Volterra, Italy, to see the Volturi. The Volturi are able to kill Edward and Alice (Edward's sister) and Bella go to Italy to save Edward.
Critical Evaluation: New Moon was darker than Twilight but just as good in a different way. During the first part of the novel when Bella is suffering the loss of Edward, the reader experiences Bella's suffering and loss of a loved one. The novel gets more exciting and adventurous during the second half, with Bella risking her life to have a glimpse of Edward and the revelation of the werewolves. All in all, New Moon is an excellent journey.
Annotation: When Edward leaves Bella, she spirals into a deep depression. In order to "see" just a little part of Edward, Bella partakes in risky behaviors.
