Baby Proof: A Novel

Bibliographic Information: Giffin, E. (2006). Baby Proof. St. Martin's Press, New York, N.Y. ISBN: 9780312348649

Plot Summary: Claudia, a 35-year-old book editor, is married to the love of her life, Ben. Ben is an architect and they live in New York City. Claudia and Ben love living in the city, have similar values and neither wants to have children. They are soul mates. Several years into their marriage Ben has a change of heart and decides, after all, he wants to have children, or at least one child. In disbelief, Claudia leaves Ben and they end up divorcing.

After some time, Claudia starts dating Richard, an attractive co-worker who has never married and is commitment free. Richard takes Claudia to Italy for her birthday to a place that she and Ben had planned on going for their 25th wedding anniversary. Claudia realizes that she is still in love with Ben and when she gets back from Italy she makes a lunch date with him. Claudia finds out that Ben is engaged to Tucker, a pediatric doctor, and Claudia is devastated. The novel ends on a positive note and Claudia and Ben end up back together with their future unknown.

Critical Evaluation: Baby Proof is completely Chick-Lit, but it is an entertaining and very enjoyable read. Giffin's writing is humorous and she delves into relationships and areas, such as friendships, romance, parenthood and family, that readers can relate to. If you enjoy "light" and humorous writing, Baby Proof is perfect.

Annotation: What happens when a "perfect couple" who are soul mates suddenly want completely different things?
